    1 revolution as the effect of a natural crisis. It 1 was not long before another lying-in women, 4 notwithstanding all the means used, was in the 4 same extreme circumstances. I gave her the 1 same medicine with the same consequences, only 4 the improvement was not so sudden. The pa- 1 tient had a profuse sweat, and passed urine 4 which looked more like a dissolved bilious stool ' than urine. In five or six days she was perfectly 4 restored. # * 4 After twelve or fourteen such desperate cases, 4 in which it always effected a cure in one and the 4 same way, and after I had tried the common 4 antimonial preparations without any good effect, 4 and often with distinct injury, I began against 4 my will to place especial confidence in it. After 4 I was convinced of the efficacy of this medicine, 4 in cases where the disease had reached its high- 4 est degree, I proceeded to order it at the begin- 4 ning of the disease. From that time, in our 4 practice, the puerperal fever was never fatal; it 4 never even reached a dangerous stage, for the 4 medicine as certainly obviated the disease as it 4 cured it when it was already formed.'
