About this work
Description
This is a leaflet advertising Lux washing powder issued about 1930 by the Lever Brothers Company in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There is a colour comic strip on the front showing how washing in Lux removes the offensive "perspiration odor" which had previously prevented the glamorous young woman in the strip from having a boyfriend but now she washes her clothes in Lux she is able to find the man of her dreams as well as keep her hands white after washing dishes. It says a lot about how a woman's role in life and her aspirations were perceived at the time. There is a note at the bottom in 10 languages referring to the coupon on the reverse for a free pack of Lux, above which is an illustration of the pack itself and a blonde woman wearing a frilly pink dressing gown and fluffy pink slippers saying "I cut down on stocking runs by using Lux... it saves elasticity".
