About this work

Description

Identified as Saint John in the lettering to this mezzotint. The action of the saint in holding a rock seems to be more characteristic of Saint Jerome, though the lion is absent. A painting of a similar composition by Rubens (with a lion) is in Dresden, as Saint Jerome (Vlieghe, op. cit. no. 121, vol. II pp. 99-10)
