"This publication is in origin and essence the Report of a Commission of Friends appointed by the Society in 1946 to enquire into the causes of present-day marriage difficulties. The Report was warmly welcomed by the Yearly Meeting in 1949, and has been revised in certain respects at its direction. It must be recognised that on some aspects of the subject there is considerable diversity of view within the Society as well as outside, and not all Friends will agree with some of the statements made by the Commission. The Report is offered by the Society, in the light of its fundamental beliefs as to the true nature of Marriage, as a contribution to contemporary thought and towards the solution of some of the complex problems of to-day." -- From foreword.
