About this work
Description
The first in a four-part series in which Robert Winston explores the relationship between the music and medical conditions of renowned composers. This part features Robert Schumann who spent the last two years of his life in Endenich Sanatorium following two failed suicide attempts; it is now suspected that he suffered from bipolar disorder and not syphilis as previously thought. Kay Redfield Jamison discusses his work in depth. Broadcaster Stephen Johnson describes his own problems with bipolar disorder and pianist Lucy Parham introduces Winston to the music of Schumann's imaginary friends. The programme contains many examples from Schumann's music.
