The following is an interim description which may change when detailed cataloguing takes place in future:

Papers (largely patient records) relating to Dr Winter's career as orthopaedic surgeon in Germany and England, 1920s-1930s.

  • Results from urine tests, 1920s
  • X-rays
  • Photographs of patients (3, b/w)
  • Copies from album of photographs of patients before and after treatment (b/w)
  • 8 [small] boxes of glass negatives, containing patients and treatment
  • 4 files of notes they contain more x-rays and also drawings of bones (in German)
  • Reprints
  • Volume of cuttings: current treatments, drugs and dosages, articles etc (mostly in English)
  • The majority of the papers are in German.

    Biographical note

    Hans Leo Winter, later Howard Leslie Winter, (c.1900-1999) trained as a phsyician in Frankfurt in 1925 and practised as an orthopaedic surgeon. He left Germany for Britain in the ?1930s as a refugee from the Nazi regime, subsequently practising in the Surgical Department of the London Jewish Hospital and serving as Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of London (LRCP), the Royal College of Surgeons (LRCS) and the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons (LRFPS).
