A brutal kinship.

Jane Goodall reviews the depletion of wild chimpanzees in equatorial Africa by tourism and by unscrupulous research laboratories and criticises the laboratory conditions in which these animals are sometimes held. With the prospect of large profits from a successful AIDS vaccine the chimpanzee - the only animal suitable for testing such a potential vaccine - is in great demand. Miss Goodall emphasises that laboratories holding HIV-infected animals must bear the responsibility for their long-term care, and must be prepared to cater not only for their physical needs but for their social ones.
