About this work

Description

"The moment of departure. The mother, seated by the fire (left), sadly and affectionately admonishes the younger girl, who weeps at her knee, clasping a doll. The little boy howls, both fists to his eyes. The elder girl, in hat and fur tippet, sits dejectedly on a corded trunk with a melancholy dog at her feet, while the black footman, in unrestrained grief, carries a bandbox and a small arched coffer to the door. The windows, above their green slatted blinds, show that the house is in a London square. The cockatoo mopes, a cat sulks on the hearth-rug. An erection of wax flowers under a glass dome is Victorian in character."--M. Dorothy George in the British Museum catalogue, loc. cit.
