Biographical note
Dr. Wilfred Howells came from a medical family in South Wales. He was educated at Cambridge and passed L.R.C.P. and M.R.C.S.in 1929 before returning to Swansea and joining the family practice. He combined general practice work with work in anaesthetics and obstetrics in local hospitals. In addition he was active in medical administration: he was secretary to the local branch of the British Medical Association, rising to the central council of the B.M.A. and a fellowship; served on the standing advisory committee at the Ministry of Health that was set up to advise on the establishment of the National Health Service; was a member of the General Medical Council; and in 1953 was one of the foundation council of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He was awarded the O.B.E. in 1955. For Dr. Howells' obituary see the British Medical Journal vol.294, 14 March 1987, p.714.
