A note inscribed on the published plate: "The corresponding plate in the French edition is evidently copied after Vandyk's original painting, but the English artist instead of presenting the copy of a copy, thinks himself warranted to avail himself, as he has done, of access to the originals themselves. The connoisseur who has an opportunity of comparing, will easily discern how much more applicable Mr Lavater's remarks are to the heads of this plate"
