About this work
Description
"About a third of the normal human life is spent in the horizontal position, and from the earliest times man has recognized that this far from inconsiderable period should be passed as pleasurably as possible. Other members of the animal kingdom lie down to rest and to die, and some build elaborate structures to provide greater comfort in repose or a suitable environment for the reproduction of their young. These, of course, are beds of a kind, but the special type of bed we shall be mainly concerned with here is unique to man. It is, in fact, the object, raised on four legs amd supporting a mattress and coverings of various kinds, which has become a familiar feature of every civilized home."--Preface.
