Query, ?, shows that the protein was not tested. Proteins are organised into groups according to their susceptibility to splitting from the subunit from salts. Group V proteins are split by CsCl whereas group I proteins can be split only by 4M LiCl. These groups correlate with the presence of proteins in precursor particles; the group I and II proteins are present in both precursors, group III and IV proteins tend to be added in the 43S precursor. Four of the proteins which bind DNA are in the tightly associated group I. Molecular weights and binding to DNA were determined by Stoffler et al. (1972); proteins present in precursor particles were assayed by Homann and Nierhaus (1971) and Nierhaus et al. (1973).
