Description
Sensory neuron from an adult dorsal root ganglion
immunostained for Growth Associated Protein
(GAP43) shown in red. Neurites are growing in
between stripes containing the EphrinA5 protein
(green). When the cell processes come into contact
with this protein they are repelled and therefore
grow along between the stripes. The effects of the
Ephrin molecules are mediated through a family of
tyrosine kinase receptors. The EphrinA5 protein is
important in providing repulsive signals during
the development of the nervous system. Biomedical Image Awards 1999.
