Description

Three wooden statues of an unknown saint, St Zita, a 13th century Italian saint recognised as the patron of domestic servants and St Fiacre of Breuil (c.600-670) Irish saint who went to Gaul and founded an abbey at Breuil. Patron saint of gardeners and invoked against haemorrhoids, colic, cancer, fistula, headaches and veneral disease. The statue of the unknown saint was acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and accessioned in 1955 (accession number R35/1955). The statue of St Zita was purchased by the Museum in 1929 and accessioned in 1938 (accession number R422/1938) and the statue of St Fiacre was purchased by the Museum in 1934 and accessioned in 1938 (accession number R454/1938). None of them are held by Wellcome Collection.
