Description
Admiral Lord Charles De La Poer Beresford, subsequently (from 1916) Baron Beresford. Naval officer active in the Anglo-Egyptian war 1882 and in the relief of Khartoum 1884; controversialist and polemicist on naval affairs. Alternated naval service with periods as Conservative Member of Parliament: for County Waterford 1874-1880, for East Marylebone 1885-1889, for York 1897-1900, for Woolwich 1902-1903, and for Portsmouth 1910-1916. Author of The break-up of China (1899), advocating British reassertion of the 'open door', and Chinese reforms. In the House of Commons he opposed the abolition of naval flogging. Portrayed wearing ceremonial form of naval uniform (?)
