Robert Winston's musical analysis. Part 2, Mahler.

The second in a four-part series in which Robert Winston explores the relationship between the music and medical conditions of renowned composers. This part features the troubled life of Gustav Mahler who had a 'mother fixation' and many tragedies in his life which made their way into his music; in particular the subject of the death of children featured strongly. Mahler's wife complained that he had become sexually impotent, this led to him visiting Freud for therapy. Emanuel Garcia describes this consultation with Freud, with reference to rarely consulted papers. However, following the meeting with Freud Mahler never wrote another note of music and he died nine months later from an infection of his heart. The programme contains many examples of Mahler's music.
