About this work

Description

The lady, wearing her night-dress, sits on a bed, the head of which is carved with a head of Cupid and a quiverful of arrows. To left, looking fixedly at her, kneels the lady's maid holding apparently a sponge in a bowl. The lady has white skin, while the maid is dark-skinned (though her physiognomy is not distinctively African). The drawing seems to imply some complicity between the lady and the maid-servant in matters of love
