In the foreground are Count d'Orsay, Lord Lyndhurst and the Duke of Wellington. Behind, include the Marquess of Normandy, Daniel O'Connell, Lord Duncannon, Lord Melbourne, Lord Palmerston, Shiel and Lords Monteagle, Lansdowne and John Russell. On 22 October 1839 there appeared rumours of Lord Brougham's death which proved unfounded. Inevitably the newspapers featured accounts of his character and obituraries giving enormous free publicity to Brougham. He is portrayed "to sham death and keep open one eye and one ear above the bedclothes, during the wake"
