About this work

Description

Wooden statue of St Augustine of Hippo (354-430), holding the church and trampling on its attackers, each of whom holds one of his books, and wooden statue of St Tremeur, also St Tremorous of Brittany, a 6th century Breton saint, who was murdered, whilst still a youth, in the monastery of Rhugs (Morbihan) by his father. Invoked for head pains. The statue of St Augustine was acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and accessioned in 1955 (accession number R37/1955). The statue of St Tremeur was purchased by the Museum in 1928 and accessioned in 1938 (accession number R570/1938). Neither statue is held by Wellcome Collection.
