Lythrum salicaria (Purple loosestrife)

Tall upright square stems with whirled spikes of purple/pink flowers. Contains alkaloids. Has been used as an intestinal antiseptic, particularly in cases of enteritis. Extract from the flowers has also been taken internally in cases of typhus. The young branches have been chewed to treat bleeding gums, and the leaves in compresses to heal wounds. Powdered plant has been used to stop nosebleeds, and in face-packs to soothe reddened skin.
