Ellis, Surgeon-Captain Frank Pollard

Correspondence and records of research mainly relating to Ellis's work on the effects of heat and cold and climate generally on health, as well as other issues of naval medicine and health

Frank Pollard Ellis studied medicine at Manchester University and Charing Cross Hospital and qualified in 1935. In 1937 he joined the Royal Navy. During World War II he became involved in personnel research, for which he was awarded the OBE, and after the war was appointed Medical Officer in charge of the Medical Research Council Royal Navy Tropical Research Unit, investigating the effects of warm climates on personnel effectiveness. In 1953 he was appointed a Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons. In 1954 he was appointed to the British Joint Services Commission in Washington DC. In 1961 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He retired from the Navy in 1970 but continued to pursue his interests in the effects of climatic extremes on health and efficiency.
