About this work

Description

In the text, Lavater writes that "this is no more the head of an angel than it is that of a man"; he goes on to criticise the parts of the face for being 'heterogeneous'. A note (probably written by Holloway) is printed beneath the text, which replies: "Mr Lavater generally charges glaring defects of this kind to the account of the copyist, but here he seems to have deviated from his usual mode. -Query, did he ever see the original, when he speaks with so much confidence of the inaccuracy of the painter?" Lettering is also inscribed on the print: "In order to the preserve the remarks of the author, it was necessary to copy the head in the French edition with all its imperfections"
