About this work

Description

Mellanby film compilation 3 is made up of reel 9 of the original films. It starts with views of boys woodworking in a workshop, in a classroom studying. It contains a very rudimentary, homemade commercial endorsing olive oil as well as footage of children being given cod liver oil as a dietary supplement at Erdington and Marston Green Homes in Birmingham. The children enthusiastically ham up to the camera, although one boy only barely restrains himself from grimacing as he consumes the dregs of a bottle of oil. There are charming shots of the children carrying old fashioned milk bottle crates which instead of milk, contain bottles of oil. The children consume very large quantities of oil. The children in the infirmary are given bottles. A number of children have their height taken. The closing intertitle "Who says that we don't like cod liver oil?"

This compilation is the third of 10 from a collection of films made at the NIMR to show the effect of various experimental diets on dogs. The collection of films is partly of scientific, partly of historical and biographical interest and comprises 18 reels of research film on aspects of nutrition, including research into Vitamin A deficiency and the nutritional value of cod liver oil, together with two reels of 'home movies' made in Sheffield, Cornwall and London at various dates between 1933 and 1953.
