Description
Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) (Variety "Crispum")
Low plant with deep green curled leaves and spike of white tubular flowers. Used as a kitchen condiment with carminative properties, in the perfume and alcoholic drinks industries. Used externally on the skin, it is said to act as a mosquito repellent. Important in regional dishes such as the pesto sauce of Genoa, and soupe au pistou of Nice. Also eaten in salads, particularly with tomatoes.
