About this work

Description

Women doctors and patients argue that a male-dominated, technologically-driven medical profession ignores womens needs. Intercut with crude scenes of car maintenance to suggest male doctors' attitudes to women patients, the programme includes a brief history and some archive footage of the establishment of the NHS and argues that there has been a violent swing from lack of healthcare care for women in pre-NHS days, notably in childbirth, to the total subjection of women to technological procedures. Leeds Health Authority's Advocacy scheme whereby women outpatients can be accompanied by an experienced female communicator is seen as an advance in helping women to approach a consultation with confidence. A role-playing session at the Royal London Hospital Medical School illuminates areas in which doctors may unwittingly treat female patients with insensitivity.
