    to the able management of the Medical Superin¬ tendent, Mr. Douty. The Committee are glad to place on record that the general conduct of the Staff has been very good. For some time past the Commissioners in Lunacy have been strongly advocating the appoint¬ ment of a second assistant Medical Officer, to bring up the Medical Staff to the average of other Asylums with a similar number of Patients ; but the Committee up to the present time, from motives of economy, have abstained from carry¬ ing that recommendation into effect. Now how¬ ever it has been found, that owing to the multitude of returns required by the New Lunacy Act, the time of the Medical Superintendent is so much occupied in office work, that the appoint¬ ment could no longer be delayed, and the Com¬ mittee have just appointed Dr. Beaver to that office. The old Harmonium in the Chapel has been replaced by an Organ, and the improvement in the musical portion of the services occasioned thereby has been much appreciated both by the Patients and Staff generally. As heretofore the Members of the Fire Brigade are constantly drilled and exercised, and the smart and quick manner in which they turn out when called upon is very creditable and deserving of much praise.
