    c It is anticipated that this change will continue, as houses in the area find ready purchasers. Overcrowding. As there has hitherto been no scarcity of houses, no overcrowding has occurred, but for the first time in the area, houses are being let in tenements. Fitness of houses. The general standard of housing in the area is good, probably to be attributed to the abundance of building stone available, and the existence of several brickworks in the area at the date when many of the houses were built. The chief defect is damp¬ ness, due to the absence of damp-proof courses. Owners and tenants are equally responsible for many of the minor defects. No difficulties have occurred in remedying unfitness, usually under the Public Health Acts. The water supply, closet accommodation, and arrangements for refuse disposal are satisfactory, and during the year measures for the protection of the water supply from pollution, and the extension of water supply for w.c.’s, have been adopted. There are no unhealthy areas in the district. The Bye-laws with respect to the erection of new dwellings were revised in 1921.
