Description

Doyle is looking at his parody of William Mulready's painting "The wolf and the lamb". The wolf was Lord Brougham. 1839 is presumably the date of the subject rather than of the present print, as in 1839 HB's identity had not yet been made public

HB quizzing the political sketches at Mason's. Octr. 4 1839 [?]. The last numeral of the date in the lettering is written on the stone in reverse (in which case it should be 9). Lettering continues: "HB. The wolf and the lamb!! The wolf and the lamb!! The lamb is very like Melbourne!! but for the life of me I cannot divine who is intended for the wolf."
