Description

Photgraph of three statues of St Mathurin, also known as Maturinus, St Symphorian who was beheaded and therefore shown holding his head, and St Benignus.

St Mathurin is invoked against devil possession, epilepsy and mental ailments. The statue was purchased by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1934 and accessioned in 1938 (accession number R458/1938) but is not held by Wellcome Collection.

St Symphorian is invoked against diseases of the eyes and childhood ailments and is the patron saint of scholars and schoolchildren. The statue was purchased by the Museum in 1934 and accessioned in 1938 (accession number R455/1938) but is not held by Wellcome Collection.

St Benignus is the patron saint of Dijon and has no known invocation against a specific disease. The statue was purchased by the Museum in 1934 and accessioned in 1937 (accession number R4723/1937) but is not held by Wellcome Collection.
