Biographical note
The author was a French naval surgeon and obtained his M.D. in 1806, after being captured at the battle of Trafalgar. By 1808 he was a naval 'Médecin-enchef', and was again captured by the English at Genoa in 1814. Later he was sent as chief physician to Martinique, but owing to political troubles, was in New York until 1816. He later returned to Martinique and finally came back to France in 1825.
