Description

Receipt-book. A mainly holograph collection of medical receipts: in English. Inside the upper cover is a note: 'Receipt book of the last Marchioness of Annandale, the property of her Grandson Charles P. Johnstone. Collected and compiled from Receipts of her Mother Mrs. Temperance Vanden Bempden (wife of my great grandfather, who was Grand Burgomaster of Amsterdam) and her Aunt, the Wife of Sir Peter Vanlore, herein are also many Prescriptions of eminent Physicians of their times. Purchased at Sotheby's 5/6/1929, Lot 601.

Biographical note

The compiler was the wife of William Johnstone, third Earl of Annandale and Hartwell, and first Marquis of Annandale, who died in 1721. Her second husband was Lt. Col. John Johnstone, who was killed at Carthagena in 1741. Charles Phillips Johnstone [1780-1863], the writer of the note given above, was a grandson of this marriage.
