In commending this work to the pubhc, the medical profession, and particularly to those to whom it has been inscribed, I submit that my long acquaintance with the disease and with its management in India justifies my belief that the object of the author— viz., the production of a concise Manual of Plague —has been adequately attained. Careful revision of the principal chapters con- vinces me that nothing which is worth recording has been omitted, and I consider the work to be an accurate exposition of our present knowledge of plague, the more acceptable and useful by reason of its freedom from controversial matter.
