Thymectomy for a case of myasthenia gravis.

This film is a demonstration of a surgical technique performed by David Lewis, Northern Hospital (Liverpool), Mr Hugh Reid with Dr Gray anaesthetising. The patient, a woman, is shown before surgery displaying characteristic 'snarling' and lack of control over her lower jaw. The patient received an injection of prostigime. After 10 minutes the patient can more easily eat a slice of bread. The operation begins. Anatomical drawings indicate the nature of the surgery. The thymus is freed and then the sternum is reconstructed. Three weeks after the operation, the patient looks well (although she does look as though she also needs dental treatment!) She shakes the hand of a nurse on the steps of the hospital and leaves with her husband. End production credits comprise of 'photography and production by Leonard Card'.
