Description
Two children, the elder seated on the same chair as shown in Thomson's negative number 648. The younger, with pierced ears and heavy earrings, standing holding the left arm of the chair. The seated child is holding a metal object in his right hand, and has the remains of smallpox scars on his face

This is one of a collection of same-size contact prints made, in 1981, from John Thomson's original negatives. The glass negatives, made between 1868 and 1872, were purchased from Thomson by Sir Henry Wellcome in 1921 and are now in the Wellcome Institute Library
