When first exhibited in 1913, the subject was identified as "Ambroise Paré using the ligature when amputating on the battlefield at the siege of Bramvilliers [sic], 1552" (Wellcome Historical Medical Museum, loc. cit.) The place referred to is Damvillers (Meuse)
