About this work

Description

William Dalrymple looks back to the Victorian era in an attempt to assess the effect of Darwin's 'The Origin of the Species'. The theories of evolution Darwin promoted proved a direct challenge to Christianity and perhaps saw the beginning of the end of traditional church going, leading people to look to science and technology and other forms of spirituality to make sense of their lives.
