Reproduction note

Based on a depiction of Mercury by Raphael in a fresco in the Villa Farnesina, Rome (the fifth in a sequence of frescoes in the villa). Mercury holds in his hand a caduceus instead of the trumpet depicted by Raphael, and the composition is here reversed

The painting forms a pair with a painting of chemistry or pharmacy depicted as a woman holding a retort (Wellcome Library no. 44608i)
