    spent to little purpose. But these habits made up, perhaps more than made up, for the want of interest and activity which for a time were ob- served in him. He went steadily on with his tasks, learned what he was required to learn; and so, little as such an effect was to have been expected, proved to be fully awake to the im- portance of having a teacher who could teach him. The incident of his urgency to be remov- ed to a better school is remarkable. It shews how far the capacity and desire of improvement may exceed the thoughts of the most attentive and anxious parents ; and may encourage them when they most despond. Lateat scintilla for- san ; — and the moment may yet come which may strike the spark into a flame. In the mean time, their course is plain. For it is certain that their assiduities ought only to be the more stre- nuous in proportion as the child's own exertions are less. So that health be not hazarded, nor the powers of the mind overstrained, they can- not keep too closely to their own part.
