Description
Collection of 30 water colour drawings of smallpox and cowpox inoculation, originally made by Captain Charles Gold R. Artillery in March 1801, and copied by George Kirtland in 1802. Captain Gold's original drawings were sent to Edward Coleman [1765-1839] Professor of the R. Veterinary College, and shown to Edward Jenner, who used these copies made by Kirtland in connection with his Petition to the House of Commons in April 1802. They were published in London later in the same year with some preliminary matter, and a Dedication to Jenner. Inserted are the under-mentioned letters relating to the volume. Taylor (Charles Louis) [1849-1919]. Typescript letter 1 leaf, 4to. 25½ × 20 cm., signed dated 24/4/1896 to Collins, relating to the use of the plates for the B.M.J. Jenner Centenary Number of 23/5/1896. Taylor was on the B.M.J. staff and Assistant Editor from 1897 to 1917. Power (Sir William Henry) [1842-1916]. Three A.l.s. relating to the drawings addressed to Dr. Collins. On note-paper, 8vo. 18 × 11½ cm. Dated 1/9/1894, 3 pp: 20/6/1895, 3 pp: 21/4/1896, 1 p. Acland (Theodore Dyke) [1851-1931]. Three A.l.s. relating to the drawings also addressed to Dr. Collins. On paper, 8vo. 20½ × 12½, headed 'The Library, B.M.J.' dated 27/1/1897, 2 pp. Another dated on the same day from 74 Brook St. Grosvenor Square, W., 18 × 11½ cm. 2pp., the third, as above, dated½/1897, 2 pp. Produced in London.
