    REPORT OF THE MEDICAL COMMITTEE. The past year has seen a continuation of the steady increase in the work done in all departments of the Infirmary, and the establish¬ ment of two new clinics. The Radium Services Clinic conducted by Dr. Nuttall, of the Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute, now enables cases requiring Radium Therapy to be seen and ex¬ amined at Lancaster, and their further treatment arranged for. Earlier in the year the Lancaster Guardian was entirely respon¬ sible for the collection of the funds which have gone to the purchase of the most recent model of the Cambridge Electrocardiographt This magnihcent addition to the Infirmary’s equipment is now proving a most useful aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cases of Heart Disease attending the Heart Clinic conducted by Dr. J. A. McKeon. New appointments made during the year are as follows —■ Mr. J. McFadzean,F. R.C.S., to the post of Hon. Surgeon ; Dr. Wilkie, M.B., D.P.H., and Dr. J. A. McKeon, M.D., Assistant Physicians. Mr. M. Midgley has also been appointed as Hon. Chiropodist. On the outbreak of war in September, it was found necessary to arrange to retain the services of House Surgeons about to retire, thereby bringing the number up to five. This increase being a war measure, rendered essential by reason of the addition of 85 war” beds, which might be called into use for air raid or other casualties at short notice. We regret, however, that our Senior House Surgeon (Dr. J. Ross) has now completed his year of service with us, and would like to place on record our appreciation of his unselfish devo¬ tion to duty, and of his exceptional efficiency throughout his term of office. We extend to him our best wishes in his forthcoming Fellowship examinations. We also wish to express our gratitude to all the other House Surgeons, who have worked most keenly and in great harmoii}^ during the year, to the great advangate of Patients and Hon. Staff. The War has already imposed a great additional strain upon the resources of the Infirmary in respect of the treatment of evacuees and members of various military units in the area served by the Hospital. This additional work has been somewhat hampered by Black-out ” conditions. Developments arising out of the war have also given our Superintendent-Secretary and his Staff an immense amount of extra work, which has been undertaken along with the expansion of work which was occurring quite apart from the War emergency. All this has been dealt with with efficiency and dispatch, and we wish to express our deep appreciation of this great effort. Though they have retired from the Active Staff, we have been most grateful for the valuable help rendered during the year by Dr. J. A. Gibson and Mr. W. George, whose devoted service has been of inestimable value in very many ways. Their knowledge and
