About this work
Description
This documentary, made over two years, follows the work of the charity Facing the World which was set up in 2001 by leading craniofacial surgeons Norman Waterhouse and Martin Kelly. The two surgeons seek out children across the globe from deprived backgrounds who have severe facial disfigurements, bring them to the UK and attempt to treat them surgically. The programme features in particular 15-year-old Arianto who has an enormous neurofibromatosis on one side of his face, and 12-year-old Ney whose facial tumour (an encephalocele) has led him to be stoned by others in his village. The programme contains detailed footage of the surgical procedures.
