The programme examines differing approaches to health care in other countries. Dr Gerard Mushemi, Head of Animal Resources at the Institute of Primate Research (IPR), outside Nairobi, Kenya, talks about the use of animals in laboratory research. He questions the use of animals in research, when the sole purpose is the welfare of human life. The IPR is carrying out a trial of an experimental contraceptive vaccine on female baboons. Dr Luddle (?), talks about the new maternity conditions for mothers in labour at the Leh Hospital in Ladakh. She highlighs some of the issues around the use of contraception by the local women, and how traditional ways of life have led to new social problems. Dr Zerring (?), who is a representative of the Tibetan Government in exile, talks about the problems posed by the enforced use of contraception by China on the population of Tibet.
