    have the disadvantage of living at a distance from the fountains of knowledge, have deter- mined me to publish the following work. With this view, I have perused the best works I could procure, as well of this country as of others, and have particularly selected whatever manifold experience had sanctioned ; nevertheless, the newest works almost alone will be cited, because, on the one hand, I pre- sumed the more ancient works were already made known in previous manuals of the dis- eases of the eyes; and on the other, their ci- tation would have occupied too much room.
